This beautiful monument was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to venerate his wife MumtazMahal after her death. It took 21 long years to establish the epitome of love shared between the emperor and his wife. The structure is built with yellow and white marble and has a height of 55 meters. The monument is skirted with two small red stone building, one being a rest house and the other being a mosque. Though this beautiful place is all crowded with spectators, one can easily divine peace looking at splendid structure. The well maintained gardens around the Taj Mahal are just next to heaven.
The interiors with fine marble carvings are decorated with semi precious stones of sapphire, topaz and coral. The calligraphy on the marble carving around the tomb of the emperor and the queen are commendable piece of art with beautiful inlay work. In other seasons the temperature is moderate, so the best time to visit Agra is from the month of October to March. The city of Agra is well connected to all parts of India through road and rail. The closest Airport is Gwalior Airport, just 129 kms from the city of Agra. All modes of transportation are readily available at the Western Gate of the monument.
To serve the visitors at their best, a proper ticketing system is followed. The visiting hours for The TajMahal are sunrise to the sunset. There are 3 ticket outlets with a different fee for foreign visitors, Indian nationals and citizens of SAARC & BIMSTEC countries. The fee charged is Rs750, Rs510 and Rs20 respectively for each individual. There is no fee charged for the children below the age of 15 years. It is closed on Fridays.
