Rajaji National Park- Uttarakhand

Situated in the foothills of the glorious Himalayas, Rajaji National Park is spread over three districts of Uttarakhand: Haridwar, Dehradun and Garhwal. It is a very picturesque National Park that is surrounded by the Shivaliks. Spread over an area of 820 sq km, the park is named after C.Rajgopalachari – the last Governor-General of independent India.

The present park stands after the three wildlife sanctuaries of Chilla, Motichur and Rajaji were merged into one in 1966. Rajaji National Park comprises of great biodiversity in terms of flora and fauna.

The major part of the park is covered with Tropical and sub-Tropical moist broadleaf forests. Plants such as Adnea, Shorea, Terminalia, Acacia, Mallotus, Bridelia and Phoebe are found here. The park holds another distinction of possessing the largest population of Elephants in Uttarakhand.

The animals include Bengal Tiger, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Indian Hare, Sloth Bear, Jackal, Python, Indian Porcupine and others also form the main attraction of the Rajaji National Park.

There are over 315 species of plants including Himalayan Pied Kingfisher, Woodpeckers, Pheasants and Barbets which flock in the Rajaji National Park. Trout and Mahaseer are the varieties of fishes present in the park.

The best season to visit the place is from mid November to mid June.

Apart from the trekking expeditions and sight-seeing, nature lovers can also avail thrilling activities like Elephant Safari here. Tourists can travel through the area on jeep along with a guide and explore unknown secrets lying in hiding within the heart of the park.

There are many good-quality lodging facilities provided by the park administration. In addition, there are plenty of reasonable and luxury hotels around the park area. Tourists can also stay in Haridwar and reach the park by car. Though, many buses ply on the road to the park too.

The nearest railhead is at Haridwar and the place is well connected by road to all the major cities in the country.
