Manas national Park- Assam

Situated in the foothills of the great Himalayas, Manas National Park is a tiger project reserve, an elephant reserve and a Biosphere Reserve in Assam. Manas Wildlife Sanctuary was upgraded to the status of National Park in 1990. Since then it has been a prime attraction for nature lovers from all across the world. Manas National Park derives its name from the Manas River passing through the National Park. The park is a UNESCO declared world heritage site.

Manas national Park is known worldwide for the population of endangered one-horned Rhinoceros. Assam Roofed Turtle, Golden Langur, Pygmy Hog, Wild Water Buffalo,Leopards,Clouded leopards, Asian Golden Cat, Hispid Hare are other animals found in the Park. In addition, Manas National Park has more than 450 species of birds; the largest population of endangered Bengal Florican is spotted here.

The main vegetation in the region includes:

• Sub-Himalayan Light Alluvial Semi-Evergreen Forests

• East-Himalayan Mixed Moist and Dry Deciduous Forests

• Low Alluvial Savanna woodland

• Assam Valley Semi-Evergreen Alluvial Grasslands

All tourists can avail the facilities of elephant rides and jeep jungle safari, while the adventuring ones can venture out on nature trails, treks, bird-watching walks and river rafting.

Nature lovers should visit the National Park anytime except in the months of May to September, the place receives heavy rainfall during this time.

Assam Tourism department provides lodging facilities in Kohora and around the park area at very reasonable rates. Many more good economy hotels can be found around the park area – Bansbari lodge and Blue Hills resorts are two good amid them.

The nearest airport is in Guwahati that is at a distance of 145 km from the Park. The nearest railway station is at Barpeta Road that is 20 km away. The place is connected by road to Guwahati but buses run to-and-fro at fixed intervals only.
