Bharatpur Sanctuary- Rajasthan
The Keoladeo National Park or Keoladeo Ghana National Park formerly known as Bharatpur Sanctuary is situated in Bharatpur Rajasthan. The famous National Park is spread over an area of 29 sq km and plays a perfect host to thousands of bird species which make the Park their home. Bharatpur Sanctuary was given the status of World Heritage site in December 1985. Bharatpur Sanctuary is a real delight for bird watchers and nature lovers. The rare variety of birds existing in the park area is unmatched by any standards across the country.
The Park is home to more than 300 species of birds in total and the marshes and grassland of the park attract thousands of migratory birds every winter. The sanctuary is also a home to Sambar, Chital, Nilgai and Boar. Several species of Cranes, Pelicans, Geese, Ducks, Pipits, and Larks are also present in the area. Around 11 sq km of the total area of 29 sq. Km consists of marshes, rest scrubland and grasslands.
Bharatpur Sanctuary is open throughout the year for the visiting tourists. However, it is always advised that the nature lovers visit the sanctuary in the period of August to November. Many migrant birds visit the place in the months of October to February.
Very good accommodation facilities are present within the park area and around it. Bharatpur forest lodge run by the State Government is one such accommodation that is very popular with the visiting nature lovers.
The nearest airport to the Bharatpur Sanctuary is in Agra that is just 56 km from the park. The place is also well connected with the national capital, Delhi. The Bharatpur railway station is just 6 km from the park. Bharatpur Sanctuary is well connected by road to all the major cities of the country. Cycle rickshaws and bicycles are available for the trip in the park.
