Darjeeling
Darjeeling once only a cluster of small villages allured the Britishers so much during the 19th century that they rapidly developed the main town and its surroundings. Today the same British charm lures the city and invites all romantic couples to spend a few days in the lap of its beautiful hills and tea gardens.
There are plenty of things that one can do in the town. For one, people who’re eager to see the peak of the Kanchanjunga Mountain can climb up to the Tiger hills in the morning and witness spectacular views. Other than this the most charming thing to do is walk around the narrow alley ways of the Darjeeling tea gardens. The walks are always memorable.
The town always looms under the fear of rain showers, but for the honeymooners an unexpected rain pour can definitely be a romantic time. The misty monsoons, when the clouds come down and go past your face is one thing that will always linger in your memory.
Apart from this, the town has plenty of big and small monasteries that you can visit. In fact the local markets in Darjeeling sell some of the best Buddhist artifacts, including beautiful murals and thangas.
A must take away home item is the tea, you’ll find every variety of exotic tea in this land of tea gardens. The markets are full of shops where you can purchase them.
For the food bugs, a must try in the town are the local Nepali and Tibetan dishes. The most famous of course remains the ‘Momos’ that you can easily get from roadside shacks as well as restaurants. A sleepy town, don’t expect to get much past 9 p.m.
Coming to the town is possible via air, rail and the road. Flights will land at the Siliguri Airport, about 96 kilometers from here. Other than that you can also come by train the nearest rail station on the main intercity line is also at Siliguri. For some extra small town allure, don’t miss a ride in the toy train if Darjeeling.
