Amarnath Cave

Amarnath Cave is the one of holiest shrines revered by the Hindus. It is located at an altitude of approximately 13,000 feet above the sea level, in the beautiful snowy mountains of Jammu and Kashmir. In fact even the cave remains under a constant cover of snow, except for the summer months, when it melts for some time.

According to legend, Amarnath is the place where Lord Shiva told Goddess Parvati the secret of creation and immortality. Unnoticed to both Shiva and Parvati, two doves were listening to their conversation. They are also believed to have become immortal. Many devotees in the past testified that they have seen the doves in the caves.

After telling Parvati the secret, the place became the permanent abode of Lord Shiva and his wife. And, this is the reason why it attracts thousands, in fact lakhs of pilgrims to come here every year, despite the difficult terrain and cold weather.

The world over this place is known for the Amarnath Yatra. Organized by the government of Jammu and Kashmir, the Yatra takes place during the month of Shravan (July and August) when the lingam starts to form. It starts from Pahalgam, 45 years from the caves. People trek for 5 long days to complete the Yatra and return back.

The trek might be tough, but is also scenically beautiful. Without a doubt, the Sheshnag Lake is a major attraction. It is believed that the seven mountain ranges that surround the caves are identical in appearance to the head of the mythical snake, called Sheshnag.

Reaching Amarnath entails a laborious trek, even after covering most of the route by car or bus. For long distance travelers, the nearest airport to Amarnath is Srinagar, and the nearest railhead is at Jammu. A special Helicopter service is also available. The pick point of the helicopter is Baltal and it will take you and bring you back in about 2 hours.
