Mahabodhi Temple- Gaya
Mahabodhi Temple complex is one of the four holy sites dedicated to Lord Buddha. It is said to be the site where Buddha attained Enlightenment. Located at a distance of 96km from Patna, the capital of Bihar, the site is also called Bodhimanda, meaning ‘the position of awakening.’
According to legend, when the world will be destroyed at the end of kalpa, Bhodhimanda will be the last place to disappear and the first to appear when it re-emerges.
In present times, the Mahabodhi Temple is considered to be the most beautifully designed Buddhist temples that were ever built. Constructed completely in brick, the temple’s history could be dated back to the late Gupta period during the 5th and 6th century. This ancient status is the reason why it finds a mention in all the ancient Hindu texts and scriptures.
The architectural marvel is 50 mm in height and embodies a classical style of Indian architecture. The pillars and statues present within the monument further impart traditional Indian look. A visitor is bound to get lost in the ambience of the temple with every glance at its architectural artwork.
The structural design is indeed refreshing (geese) with a low basement. The temple has numerous images of Buddha on the walls. The tower of the temple is one of the few architectural masterpieces that attract tourists both for its religious sanctity and design.
The four corners of the parapet of the temple support four statues of Buddha in small shrines. These statues are believed to be very ancient and therefore, hold a lot of intrigue for every visiting tourist. A small unique tower is built above each of the small shrines.
