The famous Lotus Temple is located in New Delhi, the capital city of India. It is a Baha’i house of worship and is dedicated to Baha’i faith. Every year it attracts thousands of tourists from the world over. People belonging to any sect and religion are welcome to this worship place. This famous temple is believed to be a symbol of unity for the different sects and religions.
It was constructed in 1986 by a Persian architect named Fariborz Sahba from Canada. The temple is designed in a lotus flower shape and is composed of 27 marble clad petals arranged in clusters of three to nine sides. It is very different from the other temples present in India at present due to its exclusive architectural style. The hall of the temple is capable of holding 2500 people in one go. Beside this, the temple campus houses 9 ponds and gardens that add to its overall beauty.
It is generally observed that unlike all the other Baha’i Houses of worship, Lotus Temple doesn’t have a dome and this sets it in the different league from other Baha’i Temples across the world. The famous temple also doesn’t include any pictures, statues and images and the altars or pulpits stand behind the mobile lecture stands during worship hours.
It is constructed out of marble, cement, dolomite and sand. Termed as a Mother Temple of the Indian subcontinent, this immensely famous monument attracts thousands of visitors from different parts of the world because of its peaceful and wisdom powered environment.
Presently, no ritualistic ceremonies are performed within the temple area of worship. The monument is recorded in the Guinness Book of world records (2001) for attracting maximum religious tourists every year; even surpassing Taj Mahal
