Amritsar, the holy city of Punjab, India derives its name from two Hindi words Amrit meaning the elixir and Sar meaning pale. The name signifies the city to be a holy pool of ambrosia. The Amritsar is the city of divine and ethnic essence of the Sikhism.
Sri Darbar Sahib , also called as Golden Temple or Sri Harmandir Sahib. The name signifies it as the abode of God (Hari). It is often called as Golden Temple on a version of its panoramic beauty and gold covering. The Golden temple is a symbol of kinship and eminence, everyone irrespective of cast , creed, gender, race can seek spiritual and religious fulfillment without any hindrance.
The idea of this divine worship place was conceived by the fifth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Arjan Dev. The conception of the holy tank or the sarovar was eviscerated by Guru Amardas Sahib, the third Guru of Sikhs but executed by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru of Sikhs. In the year 1601 A.D the construction work competed and The Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru of Sikhs installed the living Guru Granth Sahib , in the premises of the Golden Temple. The status of Tirath was renowned after the installation. It is the pilgrimage for Sikhs all over the world.
Sri Darbar Sahib is built on a square platform in core of Holy tank. The architectural view point of the divine place is everlasting. The main entrance is connected to the temple with a bridge with 13 ft Pardakshna. It runs around the place of worship and leads to Har Ki Pauri better known as steps of God. The main structure is three Storeyed, on the first there is continuous recitation of the Guru Granth Saheb. It is a small room with three entrances, with a Gumbaz (dome ) at the top. The enshrine is installed with four entrances , promoting indicating , for all irrespective of their religion and caste. The main entrance is called Darshani Deori with a Victorian clock tower. The Akal Takht is just opposite the Harmandir Sahib , at night Sri Guru Granth Saheb is taken to the Akal Takht. The second floor displays the painting of Sikh Martyrs.
The holy shrine takes care of the visitor both in terms of accommodation and meals. There are nine inns called as Asthans in local language.The dorms are available free of charge. There is round the clock service for the pilgrims. The Guru ka Langar is available 24×7 for everyone. There are sewadars taking care of the shrine. The perfect time for visiting Amritsar is in winter , in the months of October to March. Moreover, the city is in strong connection to all major cities of the nation through rail and road. The Raja Sansi International Airport is only 10 minutes ride from the city center. The city of Amritsar shares the international border with Pakistan.
