Khajuraho

A historic city located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is known for its ancient temples and the sculptures that adorn it. Many refer to this North Indian city as the city of Medieval Heritage. The Chandela Dynasty had established the city with numerous Hindu and Jain temples sculpted from 950 to 1150.

The Chandela rulers had made Khjuraho their cultural capital, but it is also believed that they did not live here for long spans. This is the reason why you’ll not see any forts around the place, unlike other inhabited places by the Chandelas.

Architecturally the temples are exemplary of grandeur and innovation, and were therefore declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The lavish and exquisite carvings and sculptures on the inside and outside of the temples are the most notable aspects of it.

About 10% of these sculptures are erotic, while the rest of them depict realities of human life, and show beautiful dances, famers, musicians, and others in their daily lives. Also there are sculptures of Indian Deities. Many interpretations have been debated about the sculptures at sight. It has been observed that all mundane scenes are not too close to deities.

According to history, it is also believed that before the Mughals took over, all boys were made to live in hermitages following bhramacharya till the attainment of manhood. They were sent to the Khajuraho temples to learn about the worldly desires and how to become householders.

Today, these temples have become a popular tourist destination. People from far and wide come here to discover the ancient past of India, the tantric era and more. For helping people learn more, a sound and light show is organized here every evening, which narrates the history of the place and its philosophical significance.
